Lynn,

It would be better if people would come to faith in Christ - in fact, that would be most wonderful! But I think the makers of the t-shirt sorta sidestepped Jesus entirely.

Well, I don't know about easy, but life would be a whole lot better if everybody not only read the Bible, but also understood it properly, and obeyed its precepts, including the summons to faith in Christ. But nowhere does the Bible promise that everybody will come to faith.

[...] Brian at A Small Faith is ranting about a recently seen t-shirt with the inscription: “LIFE WOULD BE SO EASY IF EVERYONE READ THE MANUAL” and writes: Life is not supposed to be easy - The hardships and struggles in life are there because God wants them to be. He planned it that way. He wants us to be molded and shaped in a certain way and to find our need met in Him. In the end, scriptures do not provide a way out of hardship but point a way through it.
Travis - Thanks for the comment. This pragmatic way of looking at scripture is pervasive and it's hard to shake and start seeing everything through the lens of Jesus. I know it's been taking some "re-training" on my part. Enjoy your blog, by the way, and the "Arminian myths" series you've been doing.

Jlove - That's too funny! I don't think I originally said but what got me started on this was seeing a guy at working wearing the shirt. I think only in the South could someone get away with that. We need to talk sometime and see what you guys are doing around the holidays.

I SAW THE SHIRT!!! No kidding, the other night at our small group we attend, a girl was wearing it. I just about died chuckling to myself. I couldn't believe the irony in seeing it.

Well, just had to share that. Love the post, Brian. You are so right. I think you did a great job breaking it down into 3 points, giving your supporting information, and keeping it short for my 21st century attention span. :)

Seriously, I do like your post and your conclusions. Thanks for sharing.

Well said, Brian. The Bible is the story of Jesus. It's about Jesus. I don't know how we ever lost that idea. I spoke recently at a college (IVCF) event, and an nonChristian student came down to chat with me afterwards. It was a lengthy conversation covering many topics, but at one point he told me that there was a speaker who explained to him that no matter what the topic - any topic at all - the Bible had an answer for it.

Yes, the Bible - your topical manual for all life's questions.
