A Question for the Masses…
What is the appropriate response someone on a worship team should give when people stop you after church and say “Worship was great today!”???

or better yet say, “O my! Look an elephant!” Then run the other way.

our worship leader says “Praise God”. Which of course we should. But I think I would prefer “thanks for the encouragement”.

Being on the tech side of worship. (That’s why I could easily find the words to that song) I get thanked a bit. Our worship leader sends thank you emails and my minister has also. I appreciate that some take the time to thank those who work hard to make things happen. It takes time and at times a lot of late night hours. Most thank me for what I do. That gives me the impression that they aren’t taking God out of it they are appreciating my small part. I say “It’s a God thing” smile and walk away because I have more work to do before I go to my other job.

How about, “Thanks! Too bad that boring sermon had to follow it.” ;^)
Seriously, what is it about our culture that presumes the “worship” part of our service is limited to what the “worship” team engages in? And why does the degree of our enjoyment of the experience somehow validate the experience? While our technological ability to transform the sanctuary into a concert hall has provided us with wonderfully produced times of musical worship, has it left us not only expecting high quality productions, but also considering the musical worship portion of our service to BE the worship?

Wow! Thanks everybody for your quick responses. (6 before I’ve finished lunch - I think that’s an AsF record!)
It sounds like you guys get where I’m headed with this whole thing. It’s just so awkward. I don’t mind someone thanking me for my participation in the worship team, as Milly refers to. (That I actually did have something to do with, and it is nice to be told that your time is appreciated!) It’s those comments that regard the quality of the worship time that get me. I mean, if an individual’s worship time stunk, would it be equally my responsibility? And here is where Rusty’s comments concerning worship come into play. (Great questions, btw! You read my mind.) And I’d love to hear the responses I’d get if I answered with Travis’ “Why?” question! Unfortunately, I think I already know most of the responses I’d get - good sound, great song selection, etc.
I’ve got a lot on my mind about how the church worships (just in general). Maybe I’ll get my thoughts together and make a separate post about just that thing. For now, keep the suggestions coming. You guys have made me giggle quite a bit!

Rich Mullins was once approached after a concert by a fan who said that the Spirit really moved him at a certain point in the song. Rich responded, “That wasn’t the Spirit. That was just when the bass drum kicked in.”

It’s a rather interesting subject. I’ve heard folks complain about how they didn’t like this and they didn’t like that also. We try to make it a great experience for everyone but if you’re sitting there looking at the worship team thinking bad thoughts then you aren’t in the right state of mind.
So you heard a fluff song tossed in, did you notice that the teens love that one?
It’s too dark in the room too bright too cold too hot. They stood on stage. We stood up too much we didn’t stand up enough and and and. He have to put our priorities in the right place.
I haven’t been in a church worship during the month of July for a few reasons mostly due to getting some pain meds stabilized, I tend to need extra sleep after I take them. To be honest I haven’t mined the break too much. I want to get my priorities in order. I have been singing those songs because I set the slides up and each one has to be checked. Some do more for my heart then others I do have to admit.
Know this lots of thing go into making it a good experience we like when we are thanked but as our leader says “We are the background not the focus” It isn’t about us.

Kinda cool seeing some new commenters….
I appreciate Rusty’s response in pointing out how we tend to define what “worship” is a little too narrowly. So much so that we may consider other parts of the service(don’t really like that word) as less important. In the church we’re in right now it seems like the preachin’ is the main event. Same problem but it shows itself in a different way.
I was also thinking about how we say that the aptitude of those leading worship should not really be the driving force behind our experience of worship. But is there some base level of proficiency that we should expect? I have to think there is. Or maybe we should get rid of this whole “worship leader” concept altogether. Whaddaya think?
BTW, That’s a great quote Travis. I’m adding it to my collection.

“Worship was great today!”
The time now is when we will neither worship in music or with guitars but in silence and as we walk and as we talk for we worship in the spirit, for the Father is spirit and the Father seeks those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth.

Thank you! I hope everyone was able to focus on God today.
[Uuuhhh, I don't know, just making something up. Usually when I get that comment it's said with a deep look into my eyes that conveys much more than the words that were said, and I understandingly say that I appreciate it ...]

just say “that’s great”
People are just trying to be positive and appreciative, don’t overanalyze or overspiritualize it.
