Updates and such

Posted on June 25, 2008 by Brian

Well, it’s been quite a while since I wrote my last “real” post. It’s not for lack of ideas, mind you. I have at least a half-dozen or so that I’ve jotted down from time to time. I think that, for me, it really does take some work to construct something that really says what I want it to say. I envy those people who can just sit down and have the words fly off their fingertips. Perhaps their thoughts are just more disciplined than mine. Who knows?

But I can give a quick update on our fairly normal household. At least I think it’s normal. You can judge for yourself :

  • The kids are enjoying their summer break and spending a good bit of time outside. This is helping.
  • One of the problems of having a 50 year old house is, well, 50 year old plumbing. The most recent water leak through the ceiling means we get to decide whether to simply (ha!) fix the problem or remodel the vintage green tile bathroom.
  • The church debate still goes on. We will stay or will we go? Odds are looking better that we’ll go. When and where are still up for grabs.
  • We go North in a week to visit Jenn’s extended family. Should be mostly fun. Lynn, Ilona - we’ll wave as we come through.
  • And what’s the deal with getting braces so soon now? A8 is going down that path but when I was in school most people didn’t get them until jr. high.

I’m sure there are other things that I could bore you with but that’s enough for now. :) I have a couple of posts on the will of God that are brewing and should get done soon. Really. I promise. Come back and see for yourself.

UGH! Even when it’s completely empty, that bathroom of ours looks icky. For those interested in such things, that is the bathroom in its entirety. I stood in the doorway to take that picture. (You can see part of the doorframe in the left side of the pic.) The toilet is just to the right of the teeny, tiny vanity. And, yes, that is a bar sized sink that I brush my teeth at every morning. I seriously think the room - including the shower - measures 7′x5′.

I know it’s more $$$, but I’m pulling for the full remodel, complete with expansion. (Have we made a decision yet, Bri?) :D

Have we made a decision yet, Bri?

Depends… maybe we can hire the children out as cheap labor to make up the difference. ;)

I kinda like the green tile though. You could make a nice improvement by swapping out the sink/counter/thing and put in a new mirror–something with a little vintage style to it to harmonize with the tile and get a new shower door without the brass trim. (If they sell shower doors…)

There is no way under a just God you should get to remodel your bathroom ahead of ours. ;-)

Kathy,
I know. I kinda hate to admit it, but there’s something in me that has grown a little attached to that tile. (Shhh - don’t tell Brian!) ;)

The only way we are even considering remodeling right now (as opposed to decorating and refurnishing the living room) is the repair for the leak is going to be quite costly. By the time we make the repair, we could save ourselves some money by going ahead and remodeling while things are already torn up in there. Of course, that means my living room is going to look the way it looks today for the next decade or more. (sigh) I guess you can’t have it all…

And I hope that your bathroom remodel comes sooner than you expect it (but not by means of an emergency)!

Ok, so the green is not as awful as it could be. In fact, if they didn’t have to tear out the tile in the shower to fix it I would be more inclined to keep it.

But since we’re leaning towards making the bathroom bigger, matching that green tile(even if we loved it) might prove difficult.

Kathy - We’re probably going to wait until next year to do this so you have a little time. :)

There is no way under a just God you should get to remodel your bathroom ahead of ours.

That could actually turn into an interesting discussion about dualism and God’s involvement in the material vs the spiritual. Until then, we’ll just say that God must like us more. :)

I’m with Kathy - I like that color green. If the tile and the grout is good, I like that particular color very much, but didn’t think the sink matched it, and the walls could perhaps be painted a lighter shade of that same green. I don’t know if you have a cabinet over your commode, but a new sink top, paint, perhaps storage over the commode, and I don’t know what you would do about the shower door . . . anyway, it wouldn’t have to be a complete makeover.

Oops, didn’t read Brian’s comment about needing to tear out the tile.

Ah, yes, I forgot about the plumbing leaks that started the whole conversation.

Ok…do what ya gotta do. ;-)

My parents live in a 60+ year old house. They still have the vintage bath tub, you know with the legs? I miss my shower when I stay with them.

If you can play video, you need to look at this http://themasterstable.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/do-you-know-my-king/ It’s an old favorite that I ran across again yesterday. I wish I could show this to every person I’ve ever met.
