Upgrade Complete

Posted on July 21, 2008 by Brian

Well, I just upgraded to WordPress 2.6 and it went a lot smoother than I expected. I’ve done the upgrades manually in the past and wasn’t really looking forward to doing this one but then I found this plugin which does it for you. I don’t mind getting my hands dirty but anything that saves me time is much appreciated.

The reason we were forced to upgrade is that some people(Clark, Milly, etc.) starting seeing our posts in reverse chronological order. This was due to a mySQL bug that our old version of WP was tripping over. This should take care of the problem. And really, I should have upgraded before now and this provided the right impetus.

Everything looks pretty decent although I notice some of links on the sidebar are a bit scrambled and I’m seeing a few more smilies than I would have expected. Hopefully those are minor things that I can get squared away fairly quickly.

Sweet! After being at version 2.2 for a long time on our personal blog, it was nice to see this easy way to upgrade.

Thanks for the tip!

JP - Yeah, I was a little nervous to try it but everything went quite well. The biggest problem I’ve had so far is related to the 2.6 upgrade itself, not that specific plugin. It seems that your category names and descriptions can get wiped out during the upgrade. I was able to find an explanation and a fix here. It’s a little time consuming but it works. In one of the later comments on the post, the author says he thinks the bug will be fixed in 2.6.1.

Other than that, the problems I’ve found so far have all been related to plugins/widgets being out of date or hacks that I made.

Hope your upgrade goes well when you decide to do it!
