I know, the Advent season has passed. But when you don’t post for over 3 months I think you deserve a little leeway.
We typically do Advent at church but this year we decided to do it as a family at home as well. And even though we have done it at church I’m still kind of a noob about the whole thing. Comes from growing up in the CofC where we’re anti any semblance of liturgy. But anyway, I think we’ll do it again. It was good to be able to have the kids participate in the lighting of the candles and good to have time to explain things. It was good for me as well. Perhaps I’m getting old but I’m wanting some rhythm to mark the time by.
I’ll leave you with this song. It was going through my head all during Advent and needs to be shared. Not only has my Deliverer come but he will come again. There’s a lot of hope in that.
That was nice…thanks for sharing it. I was not familiar with the song, and I also liked the video.
We started doing an advent wreath with our youngest about 4 years ago.
It was actually fantastic as a way of passing on some basic facts of the faith as we talked about the hopes and expectations of the people before Jesus came and also reminded ourselves that we have a Second Coming scenario of some sort to look forward to still.
I wish we’d started it much earlier so that it would have had time to take root as an ingrained part of our annual observances. Seeing the Advent candle liturgy in action in our home showed me how useful various “Christian Year” traditions and observances could be in teaching and reinforcing key aspects of the Christian faith/history that we want to preserve and share with children.
Thanks Kathy!. The song is one Rich Mullins wrote right before his death. It’s on The Jesus Record.
I’d like to do more things throughout the year, but changing habits is not easy. That seems especially so for adults. Small steps for now I suppose.
Small steps is right. . . I like the rhythm, the routine of Advent and other church holy days. Though, Advent is the only one we really observe.
You didn’t post for long I think I took you off my blogroll. I’ll check and see.
We do Advent at church, but me wife decided to do it at home also. She bought a brass ring with the candles and put together the greenary herself (there’s pics on my blog). Advent is a way to make Christmas mean something again; the waiting is a part of the story. It’s better than trying to make Christmas last from Halloween to New Year’s.
It is odd being CofC and doing Christmas but the kids and I try to find a balance. We did an advent thig this year. The kids loved it
TG – Thanks for the encouragement! Now we see what we can do next.
Clark – Thanks for checking up on us. Did you get the e-mail I sent? I thought I remembered sending a response to a comment you left via the comment form but I could be mistaken about that.
Milly – I should know that if any CofCers are going to do something out of the norm it will be you. Glad that it went over well.
