Kaye - Thanks for stopping by. I think it's a good point that there are probably other ways that we can take communion in an "unworthy manner". Paul deals with one of them here but of course he was dealing with a specific set of circumstances. I don't think he meant to be exhaustive.

Brian,
I agree with the thoughts running through this post. I think navel gazing misses a huge point here. For me it boils down to the verse "for anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself." I don't think this necessarily means not concentrating hard enough on my sins and Christ's sacrifice. When Paul wrote it to the Corinthians he may have been commenting on their lack of inclusion of the poor. Today he might say the very same thing to me about my lack of unity with other believers of a different faith tradition. It's about the body. we are way too ego centric.

Thanks JP! Just goes to show you those "Theology Thursday" posts really had an impact. :) Yours was one post that really stuck with me and I haven't seen the Lord's Supper the same since.

Jenn - Not crazy, just honest. I'm willing to bet that those thoughts you related are shared by a multitude of others.

(Sorry, having server problems. If this comment posts multiple times, feel free to delete the excess!)

Very cool, I appreciated where you went with this. I think communion is one of those things that we'll never entirely get right or understand perfectly. But so long as we're remembering the Lord's death and sacrifice through it, and do so in some sort of community, we'll be as close as we can.

Bri,
I'm not sure I've ever told you this, but it used to be common for me to feel so guilty when participating in communion that I would often "make deals" with God. My (crazy) thought process (prayer?) would go something like this:

Me: Okay, God, this is where I'm supposed to tell you all about the sin that I've been involved with all week so I'm okay to eat this little spongey wafer and juice. Let's see...where do I start...? OH NO! I haven't confessed anything yet and he's going ahead with the eating part! These people must have short sins to talk to you about. Maybe it's just that I'm the biggest sinner here! (gasp!) Ugh. Okay, tell ya what, God, I'll make up for it next time, okay? Trust me I'm a good girl. And just to prove it to you, I'll be sure to get up on time for quiet time every morning this week, okay?

A little off, huh? :P

I'm thankful that I have a different relationship with the Lord now! Glad to see this post actually posted. It was my favorite not-a-post-yet post that you had sitting out there waiting.
