“Lactivists” vs. Victoria’s Secret

Posted on July 3, 2006 by Jenn

I heard on the evening news tonight about a “nurse-in” that happened at a Victoria’s Secret in Seattle, WA this weekend. The best quote comes from a mom comparing what was going on just outside the store to the larger than life ads hanging in the window of the store:

“There are giant posters up there of half naked women up there, and I think that one right there is showing more b**b than anyone here,” said Isadora Eads, mother and protester.

I’m not sure if I would have had the guts to go as far as these mommies, but you’ve got to admit that Mrs. Eads has a point. Chalk one up for the mommies… :)

It’s interesting to see just how normalized the s*xual aspect of women’s bodies has become, and at the same time how radical the normal function of child nutrition is seen.

Tulipgirl,
I think that you make a great point. I had no problem nursing in public with all three of my kids. (They were discreet nursers.) :) It was just the natural thing for me to do. But after I weaned each one, I went through a period of time where I was shocked that I had been that bold. Not because I had fed my children in a public place, but that I had done something in a public forum that could have made men’s minds wander. *blush* Unfortunately, I think our overwhelmingly s*xual culture looks past the aspect of a nurturing mother and focuses only on the physical body parts involved.  It’s sad that that is the reality of the choice facing moms today.
