As if I didn’t have plenty of other stuff to do…

Posted on September 7, 2006 by Jenn

My friend Clarissa tagged me on this meme, and I’m one who tries to always accept a challenge - especially when it means I can procrastinate something I don’t want to be doing!. So without further ado, I present to you a book meme…

1. One book that changed my life: That’s saying alot. How about one that made a big impact? Gosh, even then, it’s hard to narrow it down. Tozer’s The Pursuit of God is up there along with some C.S. Lewis and Lover of My Soul, by Alan Wright

2. One book you have read more than once: Sadly, I read very few books more than once - at least as a grown-up. I read aloud Charlotte’s Web, by E.B. White, a blue-million times as well as several from the Ramona series by Judy Blume  Beverly Cleary every year to my class when I was teaching.

3. One book you would want on a desert island: The Complete Calvin and Hobbes. No explanation needed.

4. One book that made you laugh: Phillip Gulley has a couple of great, short little books (Front Porch Tales, Hometown Tales, and For Everything a Season) which Brian and I read aloud to each other while travelling in the days before kiddos.

5. One book that made you cry: Nearly all Angela Hunt novels, but then again, it doesn’t take much! I know the meme is referring to books, but this category would not be complete without my favorite Christmas story, “Barrington Bunny,” which is found in a neat little book called The Way of the Wolf, by Martin Bell. Oh my, how the tears flow every time…

6. One book you wish had been written: How to Detect Sarcasm: Dealing with Your Supercilious Spouse (I love you, Bri!)

7. One book you wish had never been written: Oh, the list is long. My dear husband would shoot me, though, if I missed the opportunity to shed some light on Gary Ezzo’s Babywise. No trip to the bookstore is ever complete without paying a visit to the aisle containing this plethora of parenting poppycock for the sole purpose of hiding said books from sight.

8. One book you are currently reading: Llama, Llama, Red Pajama, by Anna Dewdney, is currently being requested nightly.

9. One book you have been wanting to read: Just one? Brian’s been talking big about Winter’s Tale, by Mark Helprin, for years and I’ve been wanting to try it out again. Also, I promised him that I’d really read Friesen’s Decision Making and the Will of God – well, at least scan through it somewhat thoroughly.

10. One book you would like to see made into a movie: Oh, I don’t know. I don’t get to go to the movies much these days. I guess maybe a kid book – maybe something Junie B. Jones would be cute to see with my girls.

11. One children’s book you always recommend: There are too many to mention here. I could go on and on and recommend one for each age group, but I won’t bore you. At the moment the aforementioned Llama, Llama, Red Pajama is a favorite, as well as Harriet, You’ll Drive Me Wild! by Mem Fox.

12. One young adult book you always recommend: The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis comes to mind first but I’m sure I could come up with more. I guess it depends on how you define “young adult.”

13. Booktag some other people: Any takers? Help yourselves…

Ok Jenn, if you read Winter’s Tale then I’ll let you off the hook on Decision Making. Thought I’d play along too but didn’t want to take up a whole post doing so. So, I’m gonna pad the comments instead. :) And there’s no way that I can just stick to one book for some of these.

1. One book that changed my life : Free in Christ by Cecil Hook was an essential read coming out of the CofC lo those many years ago. Since then, Decision Making and The Will of God has to rank up there as well.

2. One book you have read more than once : Well, I’ve read the LOTR trilogy at least 6 or 7 times. Also Ender’s Game about 3 or 4. Seems like I should have more spiritual selections. Hmmmmm……

3. One book you would want on a desert island : Ok, I’m gonna be lame and say the Bible. But Jenn’s right, Calvin and Hobbes would be great too.

4. One book that made you laugh : Besides Garfield?!? I recently read Confessions of a Reformission Rev and burst out laughing several times while reading it. Driscoll is a funny guy. Close to the edge, but funny.

5. One book that made you cry : I don’t cry. Oh, ok - East of the Mountains by David Gutterson. But that’s the only one, really, I mean it.

6. One book you wish had been written : Maybe something on time management. What? There are books like that? Great, now I just have to find time….

7. One book you wish had never been written : I could do a whole post on this one…. I’m gonna say Prayer of Jabez. Not because there are not worse books out there. But because it seeme to have jumpstarted this whole Christian kitsch craze where you can’t sell anything without the accompanying “star of David” watch fob to go along with it. Blech.

8. One book you are currently reading : The Universe Next Door by James Sire

9. One book you have been wanting to read : A Soldier of the Great War - Helprin again.

10. One book you would like to see made into a movie : Ender’s Game, of course. But there’s no way they could translate the internal conflict on to the screen and do it justice.

11. One children’s book you always recommend : Goodnight Moon and Guess How Much I Love You are two of my favorites. Jenn is way better at that than me.

12. One young adult book you always recommend : The Narnia Chronicles are always a good bet. Also anything by Lloyd Alexander, the Doc Savage books(Kenneth Robeson), the John Carter series by E.R. Burroughs…. ok, I’d better stop there.

I’ve been meaning to join in on this for several days, and just haven’t had time. So here goes for me:

1. One book that changed my life: Will I be considered obnoxious if I say “books don’t change lives; God changes lives”? I will? Well, in that case, let me just say the Bible.

2. One book you have read more than once: I haven’t read many books more than once. The ones that come to mind immediately are The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

3. One book you would want on a desert island: The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Surviving on a Desert Island. Amazon.com could find no such book, but if it existed, that’s definitely what I would want. That, and Simple Faith by Charles Swindoll.

4. One book that made you laugh: I Can See Myself in His Eyeballs by Chonda Pierce. Jumping on the bandwagon, let me add The Essential Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson.

5. One book that made you cry: Wisdom Hunter by Randall Arthur. Thanks a lot, Jenn. ;O) I also made the mistake of reading the saddest part of The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks while sitting in the laundromat in college. Bawled like a baby, and didn’t care who was watching.

6. One book you wish had been written: How to Read Your Spouse’s Mind with 100% Accuracy.

7. One book you wish had never been written: Such good answers have been mentioned already. I’ll have to second Babywise.

8. One book you are currently reading: Do I have to answer this one? Taking Charge of Your… by Toni Weschler. If you really care, you can look it up.

9. One book you have been wanting to read: Following Jesus in the Real World by Richard Lamb, per jlove’s recommendation.

10. One book you would like to see made into a movie: The rest of the Chronicles of Narnia series. I have a feeling I’ll get my wish.

11. One children’s book you always recommend: Now here we delve into my literary expertise. Sad, huh? My favorites include Where the Wild Things Are and You Are My I Love You.

12. One young adult book you always recomment: I’ll have to join the rest of the group and say The Chronicles of Narnia. I went straight from Beverly Cleary to John Grisham when I was a teenager, so I’m not the best person to ask on young adult books.

Okay, all you book-ish people! No one (except Clarissa!) called me on my major mistake in the original post. The Ramona series is not written by Judy Blume! They’re by Beverly Cleary!

My excuse for making such a major literary faux pas? I was tired and it was late when I typed this up. That, and I was doing it quickly because I was supposed to be doing other things. I know, I know. Lame excuse. And it only accounts for the moment that I first typed it, not the X number of times I proof-read or re-read it. *sigh*

Oh well, you guys didn’t catch it either. What’s your excuse? ;)
