Upgrade Complete

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Well, I just upgraded to WordPress 2.6 and it went a lot smoother than I expected. I’ve done the upgrades manually in the past and wasn’t really looking forward to doing this one but then I found this plugin which does it for you. I don’t mind getting my hands dirty but anything that saves me time is much appreciated.

The reason we were forced to upgrade is that some people(Clark, Milly, etc.) starting seeing our posts in reverse chronological order. This was due to a mySQL bug that our old version of WP was tripping over. This should take care of the problem. And really, I should have upgraded before now and this provided the right impetus.

Everything looks pretty decent although I notice some of links on the sidebar are a bit scrambled and I’m seeing a few more smilies than I would have expected. Hopefully those are minor things that I can get squared away fairly quickly.

A Little Help?

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

What I need is a web-based calendar for use on our church web site. It needs to have the standard stuff like repeating entries, categories, multi-user support, etc. Nice-to-haves would include stuff like RSS feed support and capability to export into various formats like iCal and Palm.

The thing that I really want but can’t find is the ability to assign/manage resources. For instance, if someone reserves a classroom and needs a projector then I want to be able to assign that room and that projector to the date/time specified in the calendar. Ideally I’d like to be able to view by resource as well so that I could see who has the church van scheduled for the upcoming week, for instance.

This is almost getting into facilities management and I don’t know if I can find what I’m looking for the price I want to pay – $0. Ok, I can pay a little more than that but not the thousands that some of these packages cost.

Any thoughts?

All I want for Christmas…

Jenn’s been asking what I want for Christmas….

“…Running in the hydrogen mode, the BMW Hydrogen 7 essentially emits nothing but water vapour. Hydrogen technology dramatically reduces emissions generated by personal transport and, in particular, minimizes the emission of CO2.

With all the comforts and amenities of a non-hydrogen BMW 7 Series, the BMW Hydrogen 7 is powered by a 191 kW twelve-cylinder engine that accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 9.5 seconds. Top speed is limited electronically to 230 km/h.

The BMW Hydrogen 7 also features a dual-mode power unit – controlled at the touch of a button – that can switch quickly and conveniently from hydrogen to conventional premium grade unleaded.

The car’s dual-mode drive provides a hydrogen mode cruising range of more than 200 kilometres, with another 500 kilometres in petrol mode.”

MS-Office defunct?

Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

The web is slowly creeping into what used to be the domain of the desktop. Online applications of word processors, spreadsheets, project planners, etc. are popping up all over. The latest of these I’ve run across is Zoho. The benefit of these online services is that they can be updated/accessed from anywhere and you can collaborate with a geographically diverse team. Zoho offers the standard office suite type stuff along with a Virtual Office and Web Application creator – two things I had not seen from other, similar sites.

Can these applications approach the functionality you find on the desktop? Not quite yet, but they’re getting better every day and filling a niche quite nicely that was previously vacant.
